Heritage Day Families Travel the World Without Leaving Dallas

(DALLAS, Texas) — Those attending the Heritage Day at the Buckner Children’s Home made it around the world and back on Feb. 2.

Everyone present received a passport and “traveled” from the United States to Guatemala, Russia, Ethiopia and China.

The event brought together Buckner and non-Buckner families who adopted or are looking to adopt locally and internationally. They participated in making crafts, eating traditional foods, listening to music and playing games. Before the day ended, the crowd enjoyed music by Susan Gray, a contemporary Christian singer from Houston.

Joe Wooddell, father of 3-year-old Abby, adopted from China, said he and his family drove in from Fort Worth to honor their daughter’s heritage and give their boys a taste of international cultures.

“Besides that, it gives my sons a chance to see that their situation isn’t unusual,” Wooddell said. “That there are other people with children from other countries.”

Rachel Daugherty, community and family program coordinator, said the idea behind the event was to create a learning opportunity to bring people together.

“We wanted to have it all geared towards family,” Daugherty said. “It also helps Buckner families who have gone through the adoption process to connect with each other.”

Activities included a Chinese dragon dance and tortilla-making classes set before backdrops of famous country landmarks.

Heritage Day is one of the many family and group activities Buckner Adoption offers as part of its lifetime support services.
